Videogames, televisions, and computers in all their forms, and smartphones, are everywhere to the extent that the time spent in front of a screen by all sectors of society now takes up most of the leisure time of the citizens of all four corners of the world. Yet in the face of this barrage of media, citizens have developed few formative experiences for acquiring these audiovisual and media languages or for increasing their audiovisual and media skills. The main aim of this study is to assess media competence in the Spanish region of Andalusia with the use of an instrument specially designed for the purpose. The measurement criteria and indicators of this tool are shaped by media literacy paradigms and leading international reference models, in particular the model proposed by Hobbs. The instrument consists of indicators which, according to their features, are measured via subjective or objective questions and multiple choice (ordinal or nominal) options. Measurement is standardized by the interpretation of the responses to the items on a scale of 1- 4. The construct is validated by means of factorial analysis to confirm the presence of the five factors (criteria) that form the instrument. The sample consists of 667 adult citizens aged 18-55, resident in Andalusia. The results corroborate the influence of demographic factors on media literacy levels and help identify clusters of citizens that can facilitate the design of targeted literacy projects. The results show that media competence is a construct articulated by dimensions of a varied nature that correlate in many different ways to distinctive social groups within this study.

The "Digital India " is leading to mass harnessing of the power of social media in every industry including the academic fraternity. The vast reach of social media is now being captured by academicians worldwide and educators are actively adopting various social media tools for personal and professional use. However, with the multitude of available approaches and pedagogical ways, it becomes a challenge to select the most appropriate one for teaching related activities. The papers attempts to identify and analyse the social media competencies and their effect on the knowledge, skill and attitude to produce superior performance by teachers. The statistical technique of Structural Equation Modelling has been applied to develop a model. It was inferred that social media competencies have a significant impact on the core competencies of teachers to achieve superior performance. The results suggest that the use of social media should be encouraged and appropriate strategies should be devised for its usage to make learning more interesting and informative.

Based on the seamless learning approach (Wong, 2012), this paper illustrates how media competence can be developed what didactic design is necessary, and what features this design possesses for teaching media competence at university. The 'Natural History Museum Berlin project' is considered as an example of this. In this project, during the 2009 summer term, students at the Carl von Ossietzky Universitat Oldenburg (Germany) in cooperation with the Natural History Museum Berlin (Germany) developed and produced media products (magazine articles, audio and video podcasts) in which they explored and reflected on the topic of knowledge transfer in terms of constructivism in an authentic context. The closeness to research activities at the university, especially in the Department of Continuing Education, is one of the essential aspects.

In this study, the main goal is to indicate the differences between the use of SM by Polish and Slovak students and the relationship between the use of SM and digital competences. A questionnaire survey conducted among Polish and Slovak students of technical faculties was used to obtain the data. The analysis was performed using the methods of multivariate statistical analysis. The study was conducted in October-December 2018 in parallel in Poland and Slovakia. In the course of the study, 172 questionnaires were returned from students from Poland and 171 from students from Slovakia, representing a manoeuvrability of 49% and 65% respectively. The main finding of the research on the use of SM is the more frequent use of SM by Slovak students. The results showed that Twitter and Instagram (after Facebook, which was used by over 98% of respondents) are more often (significantly) used by Slovak students, and YouTube and WhatsApp by Polish students. Our results also show that information competences demonstrate much less correlation with the use of social media compared to IT competences. The presented research results aim to fill the gap focusing on finding a relationship between the use of SM and digital competences. This approach results primarily from the universal use of SM and the need to develop competences that are the basis for effective functioning in the professional and private sphere in the era of digitization.

The article grounds the importance of the pedagogical direction – media education, shows the necessity of its introduc- tion in the pedagogical process at all hierarchical levels. The concept ―media education‖ is analyzed from the viewpoint of requirements of the information society epoch. This allowed to define its specific essence and identify its status in the categorical and conceptual system of education. Moreover, the author analyzes and summarizes the concepts on the leading objective of media education, existent in the modern scientific knowledge.

A theoretical analysis of the literature on the problem of media competence is performed. The results of experimental work are provided. 300 students of pedagogical specialities and directions of training of the Federal State Budget Educa- tional Institution of Higher Professional Education “ISLU” form the research base. The purpose is diagnosing the initial state of media competence of individual students of pedagogical specialities. Objectives: 1) determining the presence / absence of the basic indicators of media competence component formation; 2) identification of students' activity during media productive creative activity as a stimulator of desired quality manifestation. A diagnostic program consisted of the author's questionnaire and an instruction- map for a teacher. The undertaken study allowed to make a conclusion that the level of students’ media competence is formed on the basis of organizational and pedagogical conditions of the edu- cational process at the university.

The study provides the analysis of different approaches to determining media identity. This phenomenon is substantiated in the context of media landscape as a complex of relationships and communicative actions of a personality within the media system. The role of social relations in the processes of building the structure of personality is considered together with anthropological, sociological and psychological peculiarities of identity. Significance of media landscape in creating media identity representing the result of building the personality's structure as an agent in the media landscape has been determined. Specific features and factors of forming media identity in the process of socialization have been established. The task is set to determine the nature of interrelations between identity and communicative action. The forms of media identity manifestation are studied; the typology of the phenomenon is suggested based on the types of communicative actions. The types of media landscape agents and, consequently, the types of media identities are analyzed. Specific features of creating media identities among secondary school students in the network environment affected by factors of multimedia, hypertextuality and interactivity have been identified. In the process of developing individuality of a young person, the significance of media landscape is stipulated by the accessibility of education and cultural values, by the openness of organizations and territories. Under conditions when the media predetermine the structures of social environment, there is an ever growing importance of journalists who immerse even deeper in the processes of regulating communications and media landscape navigation. The role of journalists' education and their competence in acting as operators and propagators of information and knowledge becomes more important. Social competences and their development determine the degree of people's awareness in contacts with social environment.

Based on the full-text collection of thesis abstracts, monographic researches, articles of various levels on the site of ele c- tronic Scientific Library “Media Education” (http://edu.of.ru/medialibrary), the author traces the evolution of Russian scien- tists’ views on the problem of media education in the second half of XX century. The choice of time frames is due to the fact that the formation and practical approbation of media education was taking part at that very moment in Russia and abroad, and the choice of works is determined by their importance in the development of media education ideas. Analy- sis objectives are to review, clarify, specify the concept, its essence, and nature, identify key categories of media educa- tion as a pedagogical phenomena in the historiographic time period.
